What causes painful ovulation

Before jumping into the details, let’s discuss what is ovulation pain? It is a mid-menstrual pain that occurs around 14 days before your period. This is a lower abdominal pain, more specifically the pain is felt near the ovary which is ovulating that time. It may last for a few minutes to  2 days or so. Pain may vary from mild to severe depending upon the severity of the condition.it has been observed that as the luteinizing hormone gets elevated the symptoms of pain arises in the women. In initial years following menarche it doesn't show any symptoms but once the ovulatory cycle gets established it starts showing symptoms in some women. 

Some typical characteristics of ovulation pain or mittelschmerz syndrome :  

  • The pain arises on that side of the stomach where the ovary is ovulating.

  • Slight vaginal bleeding may be associated with it.

  • Pain may vary from mild to moderate to intense level.

Causes of painful ovulation 

Though exact cause of ovulation pain is still unknown but specialists are assuming that these are some reason that may be responsible for painful ovulation : 

  • Ovum (egg) breaking through the wall ovary which creates tension on the ovary and results in pain

  • Contraction of the fallopian tubes and uterus

  • Endometriosis

  • Scar tissues

  • STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)

Should I consult a doctor?

You must consult a doctor if you see you are facing this difficulty every month. Before going to the doctor you should note down when this pain comes every month and how much time it lasts and what is the intensity of the pain? Mild? Moderate? Or severe? As your doctor may ask these questions. He / she may also perform pelvic examination for diagnosing the disease.

What is the treatment of ovulation pain?

Hot water bath or hot water sponging may reduce the pain for some time. Other than that, analgesics like paracetamol may help to reduce pain. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can also help in this matter as it is also helpful in reducing inflammation and pain. Other than these,your doctor may recommend  birth control pills which will completely vanish ovulation pain.
