Need to update the garden? Be a water saver with PUD

Door Marking2020 gepubliceerd op Wednesday 29 July 05:44

Summer in the Pacific Northwest is known for sunshine, warm temperatures and outdoor activities such as gardening. But summer is also the peak of droughts and wildfires, and with little rainfall, saving water is crucial.

As a national leader in carbon-free energy, Snohomish County PUD is one of the most environmentally conscious utilities in the country. This awareness extends to the use of water, as PUD provides drinking water to over 21,000 customers. To keep your yard green and save water, consider using the WaterWise Garden. You can reduce maintenance and water bills by following six garden planning steps.

What do you want?
If you're not sure, break this step down into a series of smaller problems. What are your protection objectives? How will you use your garden? How much time can you spend maintaining it?

What do you already have?
Draw a map of the yard to help you determine the scale of the garden. Be sure to include buildings, existing plants, borders and sidewalks. Remember to note the location of your water source.

How will your garden be laid out?
Lay tracing paper on the map to outline what you want your new garden or yard to look like. As you design, consider the questions you asked yourself in Step 1. Consult local building codes and regulations for retrograde, height restrictions and building permit requirements.

How much water do different areas need?
Outline high and low water use areas on your drawing. Annual flower beds and lawns need regular watering. Shrubs and perennials are more resistant to drought.

What is the best way to structure a garden ?
Arrange the planting area into a year-round structure, define the use area, mitigate sunlight and wind, and screen out unnecessary landscape. A variety of plants can help tie the space together and create a lush feeling. Trees and shrubs can help define space and provide a sense of enclosure. Shrubs are also low maintenance and can provide year-round interest through flowers, leaves and fruit.
